British Homes
There are 22 million homes in Britain — big homes and small homes, old cottages and new buildings, houses and flats. (Americans say «apartment» but British people say «flat»). Many British people love old houses and these are often more expensive than modern ones. They also love gardening and you will see gardens everywhere you go: in towns, villages and out in the country.
Some are very small with just one tree and a few flowers. Others are enormous with plenty of flowers and enough vegetables and fruit trees. Two third of the families in Britain own their houses.
Millions of these houses are the same with two or three bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs, dining-room and kitchen downstairs. To pay for their house, home owners borrow money from a «building society» and pay back a little every month.
There are a great many different kinds of homes in Britain, but there are not enough! It is often very difficult for young people to find a home when they want to start a family. British homes are usually smaller than American homes. But like Americans old people, young families and unmarried people do not usually live together.

English homes (Дома англичан)
About 51 million people live in England and most of them (84%) are largely concentrated in London. Like in an y other capital city there are a lot of blocks of flats with modern flats and a lot of people prefer living there. But people who are more conservative and value the traditions of their country live in the countryside.
The houses in the countryside are usually more expensive than the flats in big cities. I think it is normal because when you live in the country, you pay not just for the house but for the marvelous views, fresh air and a possibility to spend your free time in a garden (gardening is one of the most favourite hobbies among the British). English houses often have two floors and an attic. There is a kitchen, a dining-room and a living on the ground floor. Almost in every house there is a fire-place in the living-room, which is the most favourite place for all the family in the evenings or on holidays. There are bedrooms and several bathrooms on the first floor. There is always a room for guests. There is usually a study on the attic.
Usually houses in England are built from stones or bricks (from the local area), which are different in colour. And sometimes it seems that Britain is a country of multicoloured houses. In England there are many types of houses. People can live in a flat as it was told above. In most towns all over England there are streets of houses joined together in long rows. Such houses are called terraced houses. Two houses joined together are called semi-detached houses. If the houses are not joined to any other buildings they are called detached houses. The most popular types of houses among British people are semi-detached and detached houses.
Though more and more people tend to buy a house in the countryside, it has become a great problem for the English to buy a house because the prices on the property are increasing much faster than the wages. But it is always possible to take a mortgage in a bank, call upon rich relatives or buy a house jointly with friends.

Topic British Homes
British people love their homes and consider their home to be their castle. In the UK there are a lot of TV programmes about houses. One programme, called ‘Changing rooms’ is very popular. One family or couple takes a room in another family’s house and they change the look of the room. Sometimes they change it completely, changing the furniture and the style. Sometimes the people who live there are very happy with the new room, sometimes it does not suit their taste and they don’t like the changes at all.
There are various types of housing in Britain. These range from the traditional thatched cottages to modern blocks of flats in the cities. Houses are often described by the period they were built in, for example, Georgian, Victorian, 1930’s or post-war. They are also described by the type of house they are. A terraced house is a house joined to another house. A semi-detached house is two houses joined together. A detached house is a house which has no houses attached to it. A bungalow is a one story house, and the word comes from hindi, the Indian language. The word was introduced into Britain during the British occupation of India. British houses are also described by the number of bedrooms they have, e. g. 3 or 4 bedrooms.
British houses are usually built of brick. Semi-detached houses are usually in the suburbs, which are near the town centre. Terraced houses and blocks of flats are mostly in the town centre. These are often the inner city areas which have the poorest people and the highest crime. Although not always, it depends on whether it is a working class area, or a middle class area. Also the area may have changed over time from an area of rich people to an area of poor people. In such cases, the big Georgian and Victorian houses have been divided up into lots of flats. Where one large house would have had one family and some servants, it may now have 5-10 families. Most British people love gardens, and this is one reason why so many people prefer to live in houses rather than flats. Actually, about 80% of British people live in houses. About 67% of British people own their houses or flats. The rest are ‘renting’ i. e. living in rented accommodation.

An English proverb says: «My home is my castle». 80 % of British people live in private houses but not in blocks of flats. Traditionally most people prefer to live in a house with a garden and garage.
The distinctive feature of the British house is its size. Rooms in the house are quite small. Typical English house has two floors, back and front garden. A kitchen, a hall and a dining room are on the ground floor, bedrooms are on the first floor.
In Britain there are 3 types of houses:

There are also three types of buildings in which people can live. They are Block of flats, Bungalows and Cottages. Bungalows appeared in 1860 year. It is one-floor separate house without steps. Thanks to geographical position Bungalows are built along the south coast where there are seaside resorts and the retires prefer living there.
Cottage is a traditional country house. It is not big, old separate house with a straw roof and lovely garden. It is considered to be an ideal house.
More and more people buy their own houses nowadays, because Great Britain is an isolated country and isolation is a typical British trait.
20 % of the British live in the houses or flats they rent.
II Architecture and building of houses in Britain
There are a lot of historical houses, castles, farms in Britain. «English» style is popular classic style. It is mix of George and Regent`s style: simple walls from bricks, white window-sashes.
Architecture in Britain is historical treasure and differs from the other Europe.
III Description of a typical British house
Traditional British homes are a reflection o the national character of the people o this country. British people appreciate peace and comfort. Their homes are small in size, but bright and comfortable. Most often they have only two floors. On the first floor there is a living room, kitchen, and cabinet, and on the second – the master bedroom, bathroom and toilet.
The living room is the heart o the British home. There is usually a fireplace around which all the family members gather in the evening. In the interior of a British house, as a rule, there are light shades. The English do not like to buy Extra furniture, so their home has only everything you need. But there will certainly be soft deep chairs and a large sofa covered with a cozy blanket.
The English appreciate originality so their houses are all very different inspite of the same type of building.
In front of each house is necessarily a garden in which the owners grow mainly flowers.
British people are very hospitable and they are happy to invite friends and acquaintances to their cozy homes.
Unusual houses in Britain are Tree house (« Дерево дом »), The Bottle house (« Дом бутылка »), The Balancing Barn (« Балансирующий сарай »).
« Дом в море » It is a single house with the own island and the bridge. Pineapple house « Дом ананас » In 18 th century travelers brought exotic fruits from India and America. One British governor was impressed by a pineapple and has built that house.
Nowadays nonstandard buildings are popular in Britain. You can see rebuilt churches (Former Weslyan Chapel: Henley-On-Thames) water-bearing stations (House in the clouds (« Дом в облаках ») mills, old schools, storehouses, stables.
V Differences between Russian and British houses
British houses reflect the history of the country. England is often called two-stored, because two-stored buildings are more spread in contrast to many-stored Russia.
The «first floor» in our country is “ground floor” for the British. So, if they say that the flat is on the first floor it is on the second floor in our country. Thus two-stored buildings in England are three-stored in fact.
For a person who got acquainted to the Russian reality after living in an English house a simple double-roomed flat will seem to be harmony.
After comparing Russian and English houses we can say:
The Russian built houses for comfort
The British built beautiful houses with beautiful outside and inside design
British houses are not modern, there are elements of anciency in them
The Russian try to build modern houses
The British like to be at home. They say: «My home is my castle»
The Russian loves their house but it is often a flat. They like to invite guests. The Russian are more open and hospitable than the British
