I’d never given much thought to how I would die — though I’d had reason enough in the last few months — but even if I had, I would not have imagined it like this.
I stared without breathing across the long room, into the dark eyes of the hunter, and he looked pleasantly back at me.
Surely it was a good way to die, in the place of someone else, someone I loved. Noble, even. That ought to count for something.
I knew that if I’d never gone to Forks, I wouldn’t be facing death now. But, terrified as I was, I couldn’t bring myself to regret the decision. When life offers you a dream so far beyond any of your expectations, it’s not reasonable to grieve when it comes to an end.
The hunter smiled in a friendly way as he sauntered forward to kill me.
1 FIRST SIGHT
My mother drove me to the airport with the windows rolled down. It was seventy-five degrees in Phoenix, the sky a perfect, cloudless blue. I was wearing my favorite shirt — sleeveless, white eyelet lace; I was wearing it as a farewell gesture. My carry-on item was a parka.
In the Olympic Peninsula of northwest Washington State, a small town named Forks exists under a near-constant cover of clouds. It rains on this inconsequential town more than any other place in the United States of America. It was from this town and its gloomy, omnipresent shade that my mother escaped with me when I was only a few months old. It was in this town that I’d been compelled to spend a month every summer until I was fourteen. That was the year I finally put my foot down; these past three summers, my dad, Charlie, vacationed with me in California for two weeks instead.
It was to Forks that I now exiled myself— an action that I took with great horror. I detested Forks.
I loved Phoenix. I loved the sun and the blistering heat. I loved the vigorous, sprawling city.
«Bella,» my mom said to me — the last of a thousand times — before I got on the plane. «You don’t have to do this.»
My mom looks like me, except with short hair and laugh lines. I felt a spasm of panic as I stared at her wide, childlike eyes. How could I leave my loving, erratic, harebrained mother to fend for herself? Of course she had Phil now, so the bills would probably get paid, there would be food in the refrigerator, gas in her car, and someone to call when she got lost, but still…
«I want to go,» I lied. I’d always been a bad liar, but I’d been saying this lie so frequently lately that it sounded almost convincing now.
«Tell Charlie I said hi.»
«I’ll see you soon,» she insisted. «You can come home whenever you want — I’ll come right back as soon as you need me.»
But I could see the sacrifice in her eyes behind the promise.
«Don’t worry about me,» I urged. «It’ll be great. I love you, Mom.»
She hugged me tightly for a minute, and then I got on the plane, and she was gone.
It’s a four-hour flight from Phoenix to Seattle, another hour in a small plane up to Port Angeles, and then an hour drive back down to Forks. Flying doesn’t bother me; the hour in the car with Charlie, though, I was a little worried about.
Charlie had really been fairly nice about the whole thing. He seemed genuinely pleased that I was coming to live with him for the first time with any degree of permanence. He’d already gotten me registered for high school and was going to help me get a car.
But it was sure to be awkward with Charlie. Neither of us was what anyone would call verbose, and I didn’t know what there was to say regardless. I knew he was more than a little confused by my decision — like my mother before me, I hadn’t made a secret of my distaste for Forks. When I landed in Port Angeles, it was raining. I didn’t see it as an omen — just unavoidable. I’d already said my goodbyes to the sun.
Charlie was waiting for me with the cruiser. This I was expecting, too. Charlie is Police Chief Swan to the good people of Forks. My primary motivation behind buying a car, despite the scarcity of my funds, was that I refused to be driven around town in a car with red and blue lights on top. Nothing slows down traffic like a cop.
Charlie gave me an awkward, one-armed hug when I stumbled my way off the plane.
«It’s good to see you, Bells,» he said, smiling as he automatically caught and steadied me. «You haven’t changed much. How’s Renée?»
«Mom’s fine. It’s good to see you, too, Dad.» I wasn’t allowed to call him Charlie to his face. I had only a few bags. Most of my Arizona clothes were too permeable for Washington. My mom and I had pooled our resources to supplement my winter wardrobe, but it was still scanty. It all fit easily into the trunk of the cruiser.
«I found a good car for you, really cheap,» he announced when we were strapped in.
«What kind of car?» I was suspicious of the way he said «good car for you» as opposed to just «good car.»
«Well, it’s a truck actually, a Chevy.»
«Where did you find it?»
«Do you remember Billy Black down at La Push?» La Push is the tiny Indian reservation on the coast.
«He used to go fishing with us during the summer,» Charlie prompted
That would explain why I didn’t remember him. I do a good job of blocking painful, unnecessary things from my memory.
«He’s in a wheelchair now,» Charlie continued when I didn’t respond, «so he can’t drive anymore, and he offered to sell me his truck cheap.»
«What year is it?» I could see from his change of expression that this was the question he was hoping I wouldn’t ask.
«Well, Billy’s done a lot of work on the engine — it’s only a few years old, really.» I hoped he didn’t think so little of me as to believe I would give up that easily. «When did he buy it?»
«He bought it in 1984, I think.»
«Well, no. I think it was new in the early sixties — or late fifties at the earliest,» he admitted sheepishly.
«Ch — Dad, I don’t really know anything about cars. I wouldn’t be able to fix it if anything went wrong, and I couldn’t afford a mechanic…»
«Really, Bella, the thing runs great. They don’t build them like that anymore.»
The thing, I thought to myself… it had possibilities — as a nickname, at the very least.
«How cheap is cheap?» After all, that was the part I couldn’t compromise on.
«Well, honey, I kind of already bought it for you. As a homecoming gift.» Charlie peeked sideways at me with a hopeful expression. Wow. Free.
«You didn’t need to do that, Dad. I was going to buy myself a car.»
«I don’t mind. I want you to be happy here.» He was looking ahead at the road when he said this. Charlie wasn’t comfortable with expressing his emotions out loud. I inherited that from him. So I was looking straight ahead as I responded.
«That’s really nice, Dad. Thanks. I really appreciate it.» No need to add that my being happy in Forks is an impossibility. He didn’t need to suffer along with me. And I never looked a free truck in the mouth — or engine.
«Well, now, you’re welcome,» he mumbled, embarrassed by my thanks.
We exchanged a few more comments on the weather, which was wet, and that was pretty much it for Conversation. We stared out the windows in silence. It was beautiful, of course; I couldn’t deny that. Everything was green: the trees, their trunks covered with moss, their branches hanging with a canopy of it, the ground covered with ferns. Even the air filtered down greenly through the leaves.

My opinion about the book «The Hound of Baskervilles» by A. Conan Doyle
This summer I have read the book “The Hound of the Baskervilles”, which was written by the famous English writer of the 19 th century Arthur Conan Doyle. It is a detective story.
I liked this book very much from the very beginning. First of all, Sherlock Holmes is one of my favourite characters. Besides, the plot of the story is extremely interesting and intricate. The action takes place in the Yorkshire moors in England. It starts with a mysterious murder of Sir Charles Baskerville in his old mansion. Although the doctor says that the cause of his death is the heart attack, he doesn’t believe it himself as a lot of traces of a gigantic hound are found on the ground around the body. So, he goes to London and asks Mr. Sherlock Holmes to investigate the case.
The book has a lot of thrilling episodes. I couldn`t help feeling nervous especially when the gigantic hound followed its prey for I was not sure that the story would have the happy end. Fortunately, Sherlock Holmes does his best as usual and the mystery of the strange murder is revealed.
To cut a long story short, the fearful hound is killed and the main character Sir Henry, the heir of the Baskervilles, is saved from the terrible death.
In conclusion, I would like to say that detectives are my favourite genre. When I read them I always try to predict the events, to draw conclusions and it helps me to develop some kind of deductive reasoning. So, if you like detectives, I advise you to read this book. I am sure you’ll get a great pleasure.

I enjoy reading books very much and most of all I like the book of Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle.
The main characters of the stories are a brilliant detective Sherlock Holmes, who can solve the most complicated cases, and his loyal friend Doctor John Watson. Sherlock Holmes always pays attention to every detail and can expose the craftiest criminals.
My favourite story is entitled “A Scandal in Bohemia”. In this story the King of Bohemia visited Sherlock Holmes under an assumed name. He told Sherlock that some years ago he had had an affair with an opera singer Irene Adler.
The King was going to get married to a Scandinavian princess and he was afraid that Irene, who had compromising letters and photographs, could send them to his fiancée’s family. So he wanted Sherlock to get them for him.
Finally, using disguise, Holmes got into Irene’s house and figured out where the photographs were hidden. But when he wanted to get them, the photographs were not in place. There was a letter from Irene and her photograph.
She unveiled his plans, but she promised not to use the photographs and letters against the King. So the famous detective was beaten by the clever woman.

Король собирался жениться на скандинавской принцессе, и он боялся, что Ирен, у которой остались компрометирующие письма и фотографии, может отправить их семье его невесты. Поэтому он попросил Шерлока достать их для него.

- Что такое point of view (POV)? Существует понятие narrative point of view – позиция рассказчика, то есть от какого лица ведется повествование, например, от первого лица (first-person) или от третьего (third-person). Но под POV часто также понимают самого персонажа, с чьей точки зрения ведется повествование, например, доктор Ватсон в рассказах о Шерлоке Холмсе или сменяющие друг друга персонажи “Песни Льда и Пламени” Джорджа Мартина. Suspense – это эффект тревожного ожидания, производимый книгой (фильмом, видеоигрой). Читатель напряжен до предела в ожидании чего-то неизвестного, возможно, ужасного. Эффект характерен для ужасов и триллеров. По-русский его обычно так и называют – саспенс.
Жанры художественной литературы на английском
В англоязычной литературе жанры делятся на две большие категории:
- Fiction – это то, что мы называем художественной литературой. Произведения, содержащие художественный вымысел (fiction = вымысел). Детективы, исторические романы, фантастика – все это “фикшн”. Non-fiction – “нон фикшн”, нехудожественная литература. Факты излагаемые в ней воспринимаются не как вымысел, а как реальность. К non-fiction относятся: биографии, мемуары, справочники, учебники, руководства, кулинарные книги и т. д.
Кроме того, наряду с делением на жанры, такие как детектив, фантастика и прочие, есть деление на формы: роман, повесть, рассказ. Последние иногда называют формами (forms, narrative forms), а иногда тоже жанрами (genres). К ним относятся:
- Short story – рассказ, Novel – роман.
То, что мы называем повестью, то есть проза, грубо говоря, длиннее рассказа и короче романа, в англоязычной литературе называют short story, short novel или novella. Обратите внимание, что английское слово novella не совпадает по значению с русским “новелла”. В русском языке новелла – это рассказ, а английское novella – это проза длиннее рассказа и короче романа, то есть повесть в нашем понимании.

Как и русские поэтические термины, английские имеют греческое происхождение, поэтому многие из них понятны и без перевода. Но, как всегда, есть нюансы.
- Слово poem может переводиться и как “стихотворение”, и как “поэма”. Стих – это не стихотворение, а строка поэтического произведения. В английском для нее нет отдельного термина, она называется так же, как и любая строка – line. Некоторые термины похожи на русские слова, имеющие другое значение. Stanza – это не стансы, а строфа, couplet – это не куплет (в нашем понимании), а строфа из двух стихов (двустишие).

Пересказ сюжета
Чтобы пересказать сюжет, описать конкретные действия, сцены, пользуйтесь как можно более простыми предложениями. Как и в русском языке, события можно пересказывать в прошедшем времени (“Питер посмотрел в окно и увидел звездолет”) или в настоящем (“Питер смотрит в окно и видит звездолет). Проще, конечно, в настоящем:
Harry Potter is ten years old. He lives with his uncle and aunt. They don’t like him. He doesn’t know that his real parents were wizards. One day he is invited to magic school Hogwards.

1. “If Tomorrow Comes”, by Sidney Sheldon
“If Tomorrow Comes” is a detective novel by Sidney Sheldon. It is a story about an ordinary woman who is framed by mafia, her quest for vengeance and then her struggle for a better life as a con artist.
This novel is definitely a thrilling read. Your mind will be blown away exactly how Tracy Whitney’s life is revolutionized in the course of twenty-four hours. The story is plot-driven, moving from event to event. It’s a real page-turner, If you love books in this genre, I highly recommend it.
“Если наступит завтра” – это детективный роман Сидни Шелдона. Это история обычной женщины, которую подставила мафия, ее поиске отмщения и борьбе за лучшую жизнь в роли аферистки.
Это определенно напряженный роман. Вы будете поражены тому, как именно жизнь Трейси Уитни перевернулась в течение суток. История остросюжетная, события быстро сменяют друг друга. Книга безумно увлекательная. Если вы любите книги этого жанра, настоятельно рекомендую.
2. “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”, by J. K. Rowling
“Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” is a fantasy story by J. K. Rowling. It’s the first novel of Harry Potter series. I read it because I liked the movie.
The main character is an orphant boy Harry Potter who doesn’t know that he is a wizard. Harry lives with his relatives who don’t like him. One day his life changes when he receives an invitation to Hogwards, the school of magic.
At first, the story seems simple but then it turns out there are a few twists that will make you say “wow”. As for the characters, they all look really alive and I loved how they cooperated and supported one another using their specific skills.
The book is a really enjoyable read. I recommend it even if you have watched the movie.
“Гарри Поттер и философский камень” – это фэнтези Дж. Роулинг. Первый роман в серии книг о Гарри Поттере. Я прочитал его, потому что мне понравился фильм.
Главный герой – это мальчик-сирота Гарри Поттер, который не знает, что он волшебник. Гарри живет со своими родственниками, которые не любят его. Однажды его жизнь меняется, когда он получает приглашение в Хогвардс, школу магии.
Поначалу сюжет кажется простым, потом оказывается, что в нем есть несколько поворотов, которые заставят вас сказать “вау”. Что касается персонажей, они все кажутся очень живыми, и мне понравилось, как они взаимодействуют, поддерживают друг друга, каждый пользуясь своими особыми навыками.
Книга – настоящее удовольствие. Рекомендую, даже если вы смотрели экранизацию.
3. “The Saxon Tales”, by Bernard Cornwell
“The Saxon Tales” is a historical novel series, written by Bernard Cornwell. The story is set in 9th century Britain during the Danish invasion when almost all English kingdoms were conquered.
The protagonits of the story is Uhtred of Bebbanburg. Born as a Saxon, he is adopted by the vikings. Uthred is a deep and controversial character. After his Danish family is betrayed and murdered, he returns to the Saxons. He has to fight for the last English kingdom, but his heart is still with the Danes. He is a pagan but he becomes one the most trusted men of King Alfred – the most devoted christian Uhtred ever met.
What I really loved about the book is that the historical events are told from the first-view perspective of such an interesting character who doesn’t fully belong to one of the sides. In this case a first-view perspective is a really wider one.
If you are curious about British history and vikings this series is a must read.
“Саксонские хроники” – это серия исторических романов, написанных Бернардом Корнуэллом. Действие происходит в Британии IX века во время датского вторжения, когда почти все английские королевства были завоеваны.
Главного героя зовут Утред Беббанбургский. Он родился саксом, но усыновлен викингами. Утред – это глубокий и протеворечивый персонаж. После того, как его датская семья была предана и убита, он возвращается к саксам. Ему приходится сражаться за последнее английское королевство, но его сердце все еще с датчанами. Он язычник, но становится одним из самых доверенных людей короля Альфреда – наиболее ярого христианина, которого встречал Утред.
Что мне действительно понравилось в книге, так это то, что исторические события показаны от первого лица, с точки зрения такого интересного персонажа, который полностью не принадлежит ни к одной из сторон. Это тот случай, когда вид от первого лица дает большую перспективу.
