The main essential elements of the Russian New Year are: a Christmas tree, a rich festive table, giving and reciving gifts, Ded Moroz and Snegurochka, watching TV-programms, clock chimes and the President’s speech.
New Year’s Day is a national holiday in Russia, in which most businesses and public offices are closed.
Russian children believe in the Grandfather Frost who wears a long red fur coat, a hat and felt boots and carries gifts in a large sack on his back. Grandfather Frost often comes with his granddaughter, Snegurochka or the Snow Girl.

Russian Orthodox Church uses the ‘Julian’ calendar for religious celebration days, which is why the date is different.

Most people prefer to prepare for the holiday party in advance. We cook herring under a fur coat, salad Olivier and jellied just the day before the New Year. As for the main dish, we prefer to bake something in the oven: chicken, beef, pork or even a rabbit. The table is served in a festive way. There are a lot of fresh fruits, vegetables, greens, mushrooms and pickled cucumbers. And of course beverages: champagne, juices, mineral water and strong drinks for those who like them.

Normally, we get together for the holiday table about 10 pm to say goodbye to the Old Year. It is believed that the New Year is a family holiday, so we always try to join with relatives and friends. About midnight we turn on the TV and listen to the President’s speech. We listen to him holding a glass of champagne in our hands. He usually talks for about 10 minutes, congratulates everyone on the New Year and wishes all the best. When Kremlin Chimes, the main clock of our country, start to beat, we make a toast and drink the champagne, congratulate each other, and make a wish.

My favourite holiday is the New Year. I always celebrate it with my family. Before the holiday we often visit our friends and relatives and give them presents. We often go to the city centre to see the beautiful New Year tree on the main square.
We always celebrate New Year at home. A week before the holiday we begin to decorate our house with lights and garlands.
We also put up a New Year tree and decorate it with balls, cones, icicles and other toys, tinsel and lights. Under the tree we usually put statuettes of Father Frost and Snow Maiden. We put New Year presents there too.
On the 31 st of December we always cook salads. My mother usually roasts meat and boils potatoes. She always bakes our favourite Napoleon cake. We watch New Year programmes and films on TV.
At about ten o’clock we all sit down at the table and have a meal. Just before midnight we light sparklers and my father opens a bottle of champagne.
We watch the president’s speech on TV, and then while the clock is striking midnight, we make wishes and drink champagne. After that we go to the balcony to watch fireworks.
When we come back into the room we open our presents. I usually get a lot of presents for the New Year. And I always try to give presents to my parents, grandparents and friends.
