Rostov the Great (Russia)

For the first time Rostov is mentioned in chronicles in 862. At that time it was an important ancient Russian city like Novgorod and Kiev. Pretty soon Rostov got the name «the Great», it became the center of the Rostov Principality.

A lot of famous Russian names are connected with this city. In 991 Prince Vladimir Svyatoslavovitch (the Great) was baptizing the local population in the lake Nero. Yaroslav the Wise, Konstantin Vsevolodovich Wise, Yuri Dolgoruky, Andrei Bogolyubsky, Vasilko Konstantinovich and other princes were the rulers of Rostov.

However, at the end of XV century, Rostov lost its political independence and became a part of the Moscow Principality. Despite this fact, Rostov was a major religious center and the residence of the Metropolitan.

Rostov the Great played an important role in foundation such famous Russian cities and towns as Moscow, Yaroslavl, Pereslavl, Suzdal, Vladimir, Belozersk.

The Metropolitan Court (the Rostov Kremlin)

The main attraction of Rostov the Great is the Metropolitan court or the Rostov Kremlin. The Rostov Kremlin is well-known to Russians and all over the world thanks to one of the most famous and favorite Soviet science fiction comedy films directed by Leonid Gaidai in 1973 “Ivan Vasilievich: Back to the Future” (“Ivan Vasilievich Changes Profession”).

No doubt, the Rostov Kremlin is one of the most beautiful Kremlins in Russia.

The construction was erected in 1670-1683 as the residence of the Metropolitan. Its structure looks like a Kremlin, hence it got the name “Rostov Kremlin”, although architects of the Kremlin were not planned to use it for defense. The walls and numerous very beautiful towers of the Rostov Kremlin are only for decoration.

The towers of the Rostov Kremlin

In Russia people always loved the peal. But the peal in Rostov the Great is an unique cultural phenomenon. The Rostov peal is ancient melodies that skilled bell ringers played on the 13 bells of the belfry of the Assumption Cathedral. If you visit the city – listen to the peal for sure!! It is interesting that the largest bell is called Sysoy. Its weight is 2,000 pounds ( 32 tons).

Rostov-on-Don. Ростов-на-Дону

My native city is Rostov-on-Don. It is the capital of the Don area. It was founded in 1749. It is situated on the right bank of the river Don.

In the past Rostov was a small town with small population. But now the territory of Rostov-on-Don is 380 square kilometres and the population is more than one million people.

Our city is a big industrial, scientific and cultural centre in the South of Russia. The plant «Rostselmash» is known not only in our country but abroad as well.

The largest scientific and educational establishment is the Rostov State University, which was founded in 1915 and now has more then ten faculties.

In Rostov there are four theatres: Gorky Drama Theatre, Musical Comedy, Puppet Show, Theatre of Young Spectators. The Gorky Theatre is surrounded by a large park named after the October Revolution. It is one of many parks and gardens which make Rostov a green town and where Rostovites like to walk on a nice sunny day.

the Second World War Rostov-on-Don was occupied twice. The war cost Rostovites huge losses in life. That is why in the city there are a lot of monuments devoted to the war years and people who gave their lives for our peaceful life.

Rostov-on-Don is a large transport centre. It is not only a big knot of railways and airways but it is also the port of five seas.

Nowadays Rostov-on-Don as many other cities and villages in Russia is undergone the process of economical changes. But we hope that in some years people will be able to overpass all the difficulties and Rostov-on-Don will occupy its place of one of the biggest industrial cities of Russia.

I love you deeply, dear land:

Your hills and rivers,

Your birds in trees,

Your beasts and fish

In a splendid sight

Which give me always such delight!

My native city Rostov-on-Don.

I would like to talk about my native city Rostov-on-Don.

It has a very interesting history. Rostov-on-Don was founded on December 15, 1749 as a customhouse was set up on the Temernik River to control the trade with Turkey. Not far from the customhouse there grew the fortress. It was named after Russian metropolitan Saint Dimitry of Rostov, a bishop from the old Northern town of Rostov the Great. Later in 1806 the name was changed to Rostov and then to Rostov-on-Don.

The South “capital” of Russia – Rostov with its population of more than 1 million people is a major administrative, cultural, scientific, educational and industrial center. The city is a major transportation hub of Southern Russia, it is called “The Gateway to the Caucasus”.

There are a lot of theatres and museums in Rostov. It is also called a green town because there are a lot of parks here.

I love my city very much. It is very beautiful. I was born here and I am proud of it. If you have not been to Rostov you have lost much.

Proverbs and saying about native places.

East or West home is best

There is no place like home.

My house is my castle.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Love me, love my dog.

A good name is better than riches.

A good deed is never lost.

An honest tale speeds best being plainly told.

As the tree so the fruit.

A sound mind in a sound body.

All doors open to courtesy.
