The role of Russian scientists, writers, musicians, painters and other outstanding people in the development of modern world is undeniable. They have influenced almost all human spheres of life. Today everybody knows such names as Gagarin, Pushkin, Tolstoy, Lomonosov, Tchaikovsky, Tereshkova, etc.
It is impossible to name a scientific branch in which the Russian scientists haven’t played a great role. For example, Dmitri Mendeleev, who was the creator of the Periodic System of Elements. Another important scientist, who made important contributions to literature, education and science, was Mikhail Lomonosov. He discovered the atmosphere of Venus and influenced the formation of Russian literary language. He was also the founder of Moscow State University.
People, who love listening to radio, should know that the inventor of this device was Russian physicist Alexander Popov. Art lovers admire paintings of Aivazovsky, Repin, Surikov, Levitan, Vasnetsov, Shishkin, Roerich and many other outstanding Russian painters. World literature was largely influenced by Russian writers and poets. Perhaps the most famous names are Pushkin, Lermontov, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Turgenev, Gogol, Marshak, Mayakovsky. Works of these writers have been translated into many languages.
One of my favourite figures is a prominent Russian composer Mikhail Glinka. He lived and created his overtures in the 19th century. Glinka is often regarded as the father of Russian classical music. His famous pieces included many piano concerts and chamber music. There are, of course, other Russian composers who deserve respect. That includes Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and others.

2. Mikhail Gorbachev

This man ended the Soviet Union, as well as the Cold War. Although No. 1 on this list called the dissolution of the USSR “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century,” Gorbachev is still hailed as a hero in every corner of the planet.
He withdrew Soviet troops from Afghanistan, proposed a plan to clear Europe of nuclear weapons, relinquished control over the Eastern Bloc, and agreed to the reunification of Germany.
It should surprise no one that Gorbachev was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for his role in ending the Cold War, a conflict that shaped international politics for almost half a century.
3. Alexander Ovechkin

They call him the «Great Eight,» and he is arguably the most famous hockey player in the world. Leading the Washington Capitals as the team’s captain, Ovechkin has been honored as the most valuable player of the NHL three times: in 2008, 2009 and 2013.
His ultimate success came in 2018, when on June 7, he finally scored victory in the Stanley Cup final over the Vegas Golden Nights. Ovechkin is the first and only Russian player who led his NHL team to victory in the Stanley Cup tournament as a captain.
4. Lev Tolstoy
He wrote about human feelings and purpose in such elaborate detail like no other writer before him. Larger than life, Tolstoy is arguably the most prominent writer in the history of Russian literature. His epic novel, War and Peace, is considered to be among the greatest books ever written and among the most widely recognized works of literature.
Although this masterpiece continues to inspire people to new interpretations, with the BBC’s series the latest major attempt to reinvent the novel, Tolstoy valued his other works even more. His books are the ultimate guide to living a good life. This and other achievements have made Tolstoy one of the most widely known Russians on the planet.
5. Pyotr Tchaikovsky
As the most famous Russian classical music composer, Tchaikovsky’s style deviated from the accepted rules of Western classical music. His fame eventually transcended the borders of the Russian Empire, reaching Europe, as well as the U.S.
Even people unfamiliar with classical music will recognize his most celebrated works – Swan Lake, and The Nutcracker. The latter is an extremely popular ballet, not to mention an essential symbol of Christmas along with Santa Claus. Written more than a century ago, Tchaikovsky’s works continue to dominate modern ballet productions.
6. Maya Plisetskaya
Plisetskaya was an international ballet sensation that might never have happened. Even though a Jewish dancer during a time of strong anti-Semitic sentiment, she quickly won over the Bolshoi audiences, but was banned from its first major international tour because the Soviet government suspected she was prone to defecting. It took the personal intervention of Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev who vouched for Plisetskaya and issued a decree that allowed her to join the international tour.
Plisetskaya quickly conquered international stages through her extremely successful performances in New York and other major capitals. Upon her return, the Soviet leader reportedly said to her: “Good girl, coming back. Not making me look like a fool. You didn’t let me down.”
Politics aside, Plisetskaya remains a central figure in the history of classical dance and a true Russian star.
7. Yuri Gagarin
The world-famous picture of a handsome young man in a spacesuit is an everlasting symbol of pioneering space exploration – a monument to human inventiveness and fearlessness.
As the first man to travel to outer space, Gagarin’s fame spread like wildfire, turning him into an international celebrity. Upon his return to Earth, Gagarin went on an international tour as a symbol of Soviet achievements in space exploration. The man was welcomed as a hero in Great Britain, Canada, Germany Brazil, Japan, Egypt and other countries.
8. Roman Abramovich
Abramovich is one of the most publicized business tycoons in the world. He boosts his international fame with ever single move, be it buying the Chelsea Football Club, turning three Manhattan townhouses into one single mansion, or docking his massive yacht – equipped with swimming pools and a missile defense system – at various European ports.
9. Alexander Solzhenitsyn
The Gulag Archipelago and One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich became modern-day classics that brought their author international acclaim, together with an honorary literary degree from Harvard University.
Solzhenitsyn’s whole life was paved with extraordinary hardships, yet he became a symbol of his epoch. One of the most important Russian novelists, Solzhenitsyn received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1970. A strong critic of the Soviet system, he could not attend the ceremony because he was afraid that the Soviet government would not let him return to the country. His worst fears materialized in 1974 when he was stripped of his Soviet citizenship and forcefully deported to West Germany. Only then he accepted the prize that had been waiting for him for four years.
10. Joseph Stalin
The almighty and bloodthirsty Soviet tyrant ruled the country that liberated Europe from fascism and completely reshaped the international order, altering life for almost every country on the planet. The iconic image of Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt taken at the Yalta Conference symbolized the role Stalin played in world affairs during and immediately after World War II – a leader unchallenged at home or abroad. However devastating his policies were for millions of people, he still remains one of the most controversial figures in modern Russia. Some vilify him for his crimes while others praise him for his harsh leadership and victory in the war. One thing is for sure, most people in Russia and abroad have a strong opinion about Stalin’s impact on the course of history.

It is necessary to say that great contribution to the development of the world science and culture, literature, music and painting was made by the Russian people.

One of the greatest Russians is Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, an outstanding Russian composer, born in Votkinsk in 1840. He was fond of music since his early childhood. His mother sang him beautiful songs and taught him to play the piano.
He graduated from the Petersburg Conservatoire only in 1866 because of his poor living conditions. He was the best pupil of Anton Rubinstein. When the Moscow Conservatoire was founded, Pyotr Ilyich became a professor there.
He created wonderful music: 10 operas, 3 ballets, 6 symphonies, 7 large symphonic poems and many other musical pieces, a new type of opera, which was a great success all over the world.
One more person I deeply admire is Sakharov, an outstanding scientist and public figure. He worked on hydrogen bomb and came to conclusion that any atomic and nuclear weapon should be banned. He protested against the invasion in Afghanistan, against any violation of human rights.
Abroad he was recognised as a civil rights activist and received the Nobel Prize. At home he was persecuted, deprived of all his titles and orders and exiled to the city of Gorky. Only in 1985 he was allowed to come back to Moscow.
He was given back all his titles and was elected a deputy of the Supreme Soviet. He said that our society should develop in a new direction and foresaw the changes that are taking place now.

A Famous Person — Alexander Ovechkin
Alexander Ovechkin is a Russian professional ice hockey player. At the time he plays as a left winger for the Washington Capitals of the NHL.
Alexander was born in Moscow in 1985. Ovechkin’s parents are famous athletes. Alexander’s father, Mikhail, is a professional soccer player, and Alex’s mother, Tatyana, has won two ‘Olympic’ gold medals as part of the Russian women’s basketball team.
Ovechkin cultivated an interest in hockey at a very tender age. Alexander was two years old when he first picked up a hockey stick. The boy very loved watching hockey games, and always protesting whenever his parents tried to switch the channel. When Alex was 8, he began to go to the hockey section. He played for ‘Dynamo Moscow’ during the 2001–2005 season.
Ovechkin always dreamed of playing in the NHL and he joined the ‘Washington Capitals in 2005. Alex has still been playing in this team. In April 2018, he became the first ‘Washington Capitals’ player to reach the thousand-game mark. Nowadays Alexander Ovechkin is a captain of the NHL club Washington Capitals, winner of Stanley Cup and three-time world champion (2008, 2012, 2014) as a member of the Russian national team.

A Famous Person — Angelina Jolie
Living in the contemporary world is impossible without admiration for somebody. Almost every one of us finds a person to admire or be an example for us. We try to learn and copy the strongest traits of his character and some unique features, which can be useful in our everyday life. I believe that there were and still are people, who can be wonderful examples to follow. As for me, a woman, who I can call my idol, is Angelina Jolie – is an American actress, filmmaker, and Goodwill Ambassador.
She was born on June 4th, 1975, in Los Angeles, in the family of actors. Her parents separated when she was little. Her mother had to take care of two children: Angelina and her brother James. She often watched movies with children and that awakened Angelina’s interest in acting.
But as a teenager Jolie felt like an outsider. She had non-standard appearance, weird habits and second-hand clothes. She was rebellious, rather thin, wore black clothes and dyed her hair red. I’ve read at a magazine that once she admitted that she did various drugs and led a reclusive life. She said she went through really hard times then and she is lucky to have survived them. Despite all this now she is considered to be one of the most beautiful women in the world. Her appearance is considered the most captivating and irreproachable.
She is a multi-talented person. She has a certain style of acting, which distinguishes her from the crowd of other actresses. Also Angelina performs most stunts herself. I’ve hear at a interview that after the Lara Croft movies, Angelina Jolie came back to home completely covered in bruises.
She is famous for her off-screen romances; Jolie has been married three times. The longest marriage was with an actor Brad Pitt. They started secretly dating while Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston. This characterizes her as frivolous person. I suppose it was influence of age. They have three adopted (two boys and one girl) and three biological (a girl and the twins (a girl and a boy) children. She supposes that there are no differences between the natural children and the adopted children. I fully share her values. This amazing mother, who are growing up her children as a worthy members of society. Jolie is an example to be emulated. She had a lot of challenges in her life already and Angelina has always acted invariably courageous and resolute. Most clearly it we can see when she had a cancer risk. Then media paid her too much attention and Jolie wasn’t embarrassed to speak about this problems and how to address they.
After going public with her story, she wrote in the New York Times: «I am writing about it now because I hope that other women can benefit from my experience. Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people’s hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness. But today it is possible to find out through a blood test whether you are highly susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action.»
It is no wonder that Angelina has practically no free time. After all, she isn’t only thoughtful mother, but also is a virtuous person, an active participant in charity and social activity.
Jolie first became personally aware of worldwide humanitarian crises while filming Tomb Raider in Cambodia. She eventually turned to The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), for more information on international trouble spots.
Since 2001, Jolie has been on field missions around the world and met with refugees and internally displaced persons in more than 20 countries to help survivors of conflict and natural disaster. Moreover she has the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, dedicated to eradicating extreme rural poverty, protecting natural resources and conserving wildlife.
To sum up that I wanted to say that Angelina Jolie is a jack of all trades. She gives a considerable amount of time to the United Nations, as well as working hard at her career. Jolie has proved herself brilliantly adept at juggling her many roles — and hopefully will continue to do, for many years to come. She is an example of a contemporary woman and each of us needs to have such an idol to admire and take example of.
