Каждый год 5 ноября во всей Великобритании празднуют ночь Гая Фокса (Guy Fawkes Night). Кто такой этот Гай Фокс и почему каждый год в эту ночь сжигают на улицах его чучело? Guy Fawkes Night (история происхождения английского праздника)
Чем же не угодил заговорщикам английский король Яков I, сын Марии Стюарт, шотландской королевы, казненной по приказу великой Елизаветы I, между прочим своей двоюродной сестры.
Чтобы ответить на этот вопрос, придется отправиться в Англию начала 17 века. 1603 год. Умерла королева Елизавета I, дочь короля Генриха VIII и Анны Болейн, протестантка до мозга костей, которая как и ее отец всю свою жизнь преследовала католиков.
Наоборот, ее сестра Мария Стюарт, королева Шотландии, была католичкой, также как, впрочем, и ее сводная сестра Мария Тюдор (дочь короля Генриха VIII и Катерины Арагонской, его первой жены). Как известно, у Елизаветы I не было законных наследников, и по некоему темному соглашению английский трон был завещан сыну ее непримиримой соперницы Марии. Есть сведения, что он предал свою мать, выступив в роли одного из ее обвинителей в суде. Много надежд связывали католики с восшествием на престол Якова I, сына ярой католички Марии Стюарт,
Участники заговора сняли дом, примыкавший к зданию парламента, и прорыли тоннель в заброшенный подвал, находившийся под зданием палаты лордов. Сюда были перенесены бочки с порохом. День взрыва был назначен на 5 ноября, день открытия парламентской сессии.
Заговор был раскрыт совершенно случайно, когда один из заговорщиков Френсис Грешам отправил письмо с предупреждением не посещать заседание парламента лорду Монтиглу, мужу своей сестры. Такое послание, конечно, привлекло внимание и вскоре попало в руки самого короля Якова I. За несколько часов до открытия сессии в подвале под палатой лордов был обнаружен Гай Фокс с фитилем в руках и 36 бочек с порохом. Еще бы несколько минут промедления, и весь парламент взлетел бы на воздух! С тех самых пор возникла церемония осмотра данного подвала, которая проводится каждый год в день открытия парламентской сессии.
Суд был быстр в своем решении. Кетсби и другие заговорщики были арестованы и публично казнены в центре Лондона на площади собора святого Павла. Гай Фокс же был вздернут и выпотрошен на дворцовой площадке. Именно ему была уготована самая жестокая казнь (подробности опускаем).
Правда это или нет, несомненно одно, теперь это событие — повод весело провести время ночь на 5 ноября, наслаждаясь праздничным фейерверком и церемониальным сжиганием чучела Гая Фокса на огромном костре.

The children then march their ‘Guy’ through the streets asking people for money: ‘A penny for the Guy, mister?’ If they collect enough money, they go and buy fireworks — rockets, and sparklers and the like.
As soon as it gets dark, everyone, children and adults, make a huge bonfire and burn the dummy on it. No one should go hungry, of course. Special foods go with the bonfire and the festivities — sweet chestnuts, baked potatoes and toffee apples (apples which are placed on sticks and covered with toffee).

If you want to surprise your guests on Guy Fawkes Day, try to cook this popular English dish or make your mum do it. INGREDIENTS:10 sweet apples10 sticks1,5 cup sugar0,5 cup water100 grams butter0,5 cup golden syrup 1 tablespoon lemon juice Wash and dry the apples and remove apple stems. Push a stick into each apple.Put sugar and water into a heavy saucepan; heat gently till the sugar is dissolved, stirring constantly. Add butter, golden syrup and lemon juice and stir well. Turn up heat and boil without stirring till toffee thickened. Remove from heat.Butter a big plate. Dip each apple into toffee, then plunge it quickly into bowl of cold water and stand on plate. Bon appetite!

In 1605, King James I was on the throne. He was a Protestant and hated Catholics. and Catholics hated him. James had ordered all Catholic priests to leave the country and wouldn’t allow Catholics to worship as they pleased. James took the Scottish throne when he was just a year old, and was known as James VI of Scotland. When Elizabeth I died, he took the English throne as well as the Scottish one. He was the first monarch to rule both countries but he was known as James I of England.
Guy Fawkes and some of his friends decided to do away with the King and the Members of Parliament who were making life difficult for Catholics. To carry out their plan, the plotters got hold of 36 barrels of gunpowder and rolled them into the cellar, just under the House of Lords. The idea was to set off the gunpowder as soon as the King opened the new session of Parliament on the fifth of November, 1605.But as the group worked on the plot, it became clear that some innocent people would be hurt or killed in the attack. Some of the plotters started having second thoughts. One of the group members even sent an anonymous letter warning his friend, Lord Monteagle, to stay away from Parliament on the fifth of November.The warning letter reached the King. The plot was discovered.
In the early hours of the fifth of November, Guy Fawkes, who was hiding in the cellar with the 36 barrels of gunpowder, was arrested and taken to the Tower of London.
At the Tower he was tortured: he was hung by his wrists in manacles and stretched on the rack. Forty eight hours later, and with a broken body, he confessed that he was going to blow up Parliament. But he bravely refused to give away the names of his friends until he learned that they were no secret to the government, and that some of the plotters had already been killed. Guy Fawkes was finally executed on January 31st, 1606 in the Old Palace Yard at Westminster. After he was hanged, he was drawn through the streets of London behind a horse cart. Then he was chopped into ‘quarters’.
Other members of the group were also hunted down, tortured and executed in the same manner.Since then the dummy of poor Guy Fawkes is burnt every fifth of November on bonfires throughout Britain.
The cellars where Guy Fawkes was captured are still searched before each opening of Parliament, and on the evening of November 4th each year. This is a spectacular ceremony and everything is done just as it was done almost four centuries ago.
Some people, however, have been wondering whether the British are celebrating Fawkes’ execution or honouring his attempt to do away with the government.

Teacher: Good afternoon, children! Today we can learn about a very interesting tradition of English people “Guy Fawkes Night”. Listen to the story about this event and be ready to answer the questions of the quiz.
P1: The festivities which take place in Britain on 5th November each year commemorate the attempt in 1605 by Guy Fawkes and a group of conspirators to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London, in vengeance for what they considered to be unfair treatment of Catholics by King James I.
P2: In a cellar beneath the House of Lords, the 13 conspirators hid 36 barrels of gunpowder, which they planned to set light to during the opening of Parliament when the King and the whole of Parliament would be present. However, news reached the King in time, and his forces stormed the hideaway and found Guy Fawkes, who was arrested, tortured and publicly executed, along with his fellow plotters.
P3: The event is commemorated every year in Britain with fireworks and bonfires. The bonfire tradition dates back to the night of the failed coup, when Londoners lit fires to celebrate the King’s escape. Often children make a dummy of Guy Fawkes, and collect money by asking for «a penny for the Guy», before placing it on top of the fire.

Today, I’m going to talk to you about one of celebrate of England. There is a special day in England which is called Guy Fawkes Day. On the fifth of November every year English boys and girls carry funny figures about the streets. These figures are made of straw and dressed in an old coat and a hat, with a mask for a face.
The children knock at the doors and sing; «Remember, remember, The fifth of November, Gunpowder, Treason and Plot. I don’t see no reason Why Gunpowder Treason Should ever be forgot.» The children expect people to give them some money which is spent on fireworks. In the evening a bonfire is made, and the figures are burnt on it.
Each of the figures is called Guy Fawkes. You want to know, of course, who Guy Fawkes was and what he did. On November 5, 1605, Guy Fawkes and some other people planned to blow up the English Parliament. The plot was discovered and Guy Fawkes was hanged. In the moment of his arrest he wore a mask on his face.
So ever since, as November 5th approaches, children let off fireworks and burn straw figures on a big bonfire.

День Гая Фокса (Guy Fawkes Day) и сопровождающая его Ночь костров (англ. Bonfire Night) — это один из самых шумных праздников в Англии. Его отмечают каждый год 5 ноября.
Но в 2020 году в связи с пандемией коронавируса праздничные мероприятия могут быть отменены.
Праздник посвящен одному историческому событию, произошедшему 5 ноября 1605 года, когда злоумышленниками был спланирован заговор против короля Якова I и членов Парламента.
Но заговор был неожиданно сорван. Накануне запланированного взрыва один из участников послал своему другу лорду Монтиглу письмо, в котором он просил его не посещать Парламент 5 ноября. Несколькими часами позже письмо оказалось в руках самого короля. Яков I приказал обыскать подвалы Парламента, где были обнаружены 36 бочек с порохом и Гай Фокс, намеревавшийся с минуты на минуту поджечь фитиль, ведущий к наполненному порохом подвалу под Палатой Лордов.
После нечеловеческих пыток и издевательств Гай Фокс выдал все имена злоумышленников. Все заговорщики были публично казнены, а Гай Фокс четвертован. Лондонцы в благодарность за избавление короля от смерти стали жечь на улицах костры. Со временем эта традиция переросла в более грандиозное событие, и на кострах стали сжигать чучела Гая Фокса, символы «Порохового Заговора», к тому же она была дополнена фейерверками и взрывающимися петардами и дошла до нашего времени.
Традиционно на 5 ноября готовят картофельное пюре с толстыми английскими сосисками, обжаренными на гриле, а в углях запекают картофель и едят его с щепоткой соли.
Существует и другое кушанье на День Гая Фокса — куриные ножки барбекю вприкуску с капустно-морковным салатом «coleslaw», заправленным майонезом, а на десерт яблоки-тоффи с сиропом, из которого делают ириски. Дети разукрашивают лицо углем «для камуфляжа» и счастливо бегают вокруг костра, не подозревая о настоящем предназначении этого праздника.
